Interestingly, in the last few years, I’ve
been involved in a couple of studies looking at whether or not elite athletes
appropriately periodised their nutrition. In a questionnaire, most elite athletes
know and have the knowledge about nutrition periodisation with 80%-90% understanding they should periodise, and eat more. Eat more carbs and
protein around hard training days. However, in the same group of athletes
when we did a one-week dietary recording. Very few athletes actually implemented
their knowledge effectively. So there’s a gap sometimes between implementation and
knowledge, that we need to appreciate as practitioners.
