Kyäni Wellness TV: Episode 053–Inflammation and What to Do About It


Hello, and welcome to another episode of Kyäni
Wellness TV. My name is Dr. Andreas Boettcher, a member
of the Scientific Advisory Board here at Kyäni. And in today’s episode, we’re gonna talk about
inflammation. After all, you hear it all over the internet
and you’ve likely heard about it from your friends and your colleagues. But ultimately, what is it? How do you know if you have it and if you
do, how can you manage it? Stay tuned. [00:00:25]
[music] [00:00:40] Now, when it comes to inflammation, we wanna
talk about the different types. There is acute inflammation and there’s chronic
inflammation. And first and foremost, inflammation is actually
a healthy response. It’s how our body deals with foreign invaders
by boosting our immune system and attacking the viruses and the bacteria that are ultimately
trying to attack us. It’s also very normal to see it in acute inflammation
due to an accident, an injury or trauma of any kind where you maybe have smashed your
hand with a hammer and, of course, it swells up. It gets red, it gets puffy, it gets swollen,
it becomes painful. Those are all natural responses of inflammation
to help stimulate health, healing and well-being. However, what we wanna talk about is chronic
inflammation. And it’s chronic inflammation that is, after
all, the most detrimental to your long-term health and well-being because when you have
chronic levels of inflammation, it can be linked to a whole host of chronic diseases,
many of the top threats to our health and well-being including heart disease, asthma,
celiac disease, cancer, diabetes, lupus, leaky gut syndrome, and really, the list grows on. And so, it’s very important that we pay attention
to the lifestyle choices that we make because in many times, we are unwittingly or unknowingly
or unintentionally actually inflicting more harm and more inflammation into our body. And the thing about inflammation is that it
truly is a silent killer, potentially, because it’s very slow. It’s consistent, it’s very persistent and
if left unchecked, wreaks havoc through virtually every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. So managing your levels of inflammation are
critically important. Now, before we go into the management, what
are some of the most common causes of…easy for me to say, inflammation? Well, chronic stress is a big one. And today’s world is probably more stressful
than it ever has been or maybe it hasn’t, I don’t know. I don’t know what it was like to be back in
our hunter-gatherer days where we didn’t know where our food was gonna be coming from or
lions were trying to eat us. Who knows? Bottom line is that we all have stress. So, having healthy ways that we can manage
stress in our life is going to be absolutely critical to your long-term health and well-being. And so my preferred way of handling stress
is through what I call movement meditation, through exercise, health, and fitness and
taking that negative energy of whatever is going on in my life and my world and then,
basically, transmuting it into positive action and activity. But for you, it might be simply reading a
book. Maybe it’s going to the beach, putting your
toes in the sand. Going to your favorite mountain view or watching
a sunset or spending time with your family or with your children. Or reading a book. The list goes on and on. It’s ultimately what’s going to work for you. And maybe it’s yoga or maybe it’s meditation. And so the key is to have a strategy in place
to help manage the levels of stress that we all experience. It’s unavoidable. Now, for the rest of this list, though, these
are things that we definitely can control a lot more of. And that is, ultimately, the choices that
we make in what we put in our body. From processed foods, to sugar, to excessive
amounts of alcohol, smoking, artificial trans fats, vegetable oils, fried food, processed
foods. Anything that’s in a bag or in a box for the
most part, it’s gonna be heavily processed, a lot of chemicals, a lot of additives, a
lot of things that wreak havoc on your body’s natural responses to what it can perceive
as, basically, foreign invaders because so many of these foods or so-called “foods” are
laden with so many chemicals and additives, your body doesn’t even actually know what
it is and it reacts in an inflammatory state. Sugar choices and alcohol, smoking and so
forth. So it’s really important that you look at
what are the lifestyle choices that you are making consistently and where can you start
to limit or start to completely eliminate these things that are on this list that may
be possibly contributing to the very problems and challenges that you may be facing. Now, here are some things that you can do,
that you can add to your diet that have been shown to produce tremendous benefits in helping
your body to have a healthy inflammatory response, so basically, to counteract the effects of
inflammation. And so this is where I have my issues with
so many in the biohacking sphere and space, because it ultimately always comes back to
eliminating the things that were on the previous slide, adding fitness and exercise and, in
addition, to the foods and the choices that we make on a daily basis. You still need to go back to eating your healthy
fruits, your organic vegetables, your organic pasture-raised, wild-caught fish, salmon,
you know, grass-fed beef, steak, eggs, or if you’re vegan, the choices that you’re making
there. You ultimately come back to those things. And so there’s only so much food at the end
of the day that we can choose from and most people are not eating enough of what we’re
intended to eat and, unfortunately, are eating what a lot of people, marketers, think that
we should be eating to “have fun.” Now, blueberries have been shown to be strong
in their ability to fight inflammation because of their heavy polyphenol content. Particularly, the wild Alaskan blueberry,
which has 10 times the vitamin C content of the traditional blueberry that’s found in
the lower 48 states. I mean, if you think about wild blueberries
surviving the harsh climate of the Alaskan wilderness, as a result, it has its own protective
mechanisms that pass on to those that consume them. Leafy green vegetables, beets, salmon, broccoli,
coconut oil, ginger, chia seeds, pineapple, walnuts are all loaded with natural antioxidants,
natural anti-inflammatories, help to manage inflammation on a powerful level to help provide
the rich polyphenols, the bioflavonoids, and even the nitrates. Nitrates are precursors. Now, I’m not talking about the nitrates that
are related in processed food, which convert into nitrosamines, which have been known to
be a known carcinogen. There’s a whole separate episode here on Kyäni
Wellness TV. But I wanna make sure you understand that
there’s a distinction that there are healthy nitrates that we all must get to help boost
our body’s natural ability to produce nitric oxide to help us to maintain our arterial
health and well-being. And as we age, our nitric oxide starts to
decline. And as a result, the arteries start to stiffen,
they become arterosclerotic and atherosclerosis is the build-up of plaque. And atherosclerosis is, actually, a result
in part to chronic inflammation. And so you can see it’s very important. It’s just not one thing. There’s not just one biohack you can do to
maintain what we call healthy living here at Kyäni. It’s the sum of a lot of small steps repeated
every single day and a lot of small choices avoided every single day, or at least for
the most part, most of the time and we’ve got a lot of things coming out here depending
on where and when you are actually watching this video that actually already may be live. So make sure you follow us here on YouTube

how to do it without all the fads, the gimmicks, the hypes, and the trickery that’s being used

fix all your problems. It’s just not that simple. But the more you can consume of this and the
less you can have of the others, you’re already gonna be miles ahead of probably everyone
else down the street from your home right now because of the powerful benefits that
these foods provide that the majority of people are not getting in rich-enough amounts. The other thing, too, to avoid is you wanna
avoid the traditional steaks and beef. You wanna make sure you get grass-fed, grass-finished
beef and steak because they’re higher in omega-3 content versus those that are fed grain food. They are typically higher in omega-6 fatty
acids. And those omega-6s could contribute to higher
states of inflammation and most people’s ratios are way off when it comes to omega-6s and
omega-3s. And so it’s very important that you reduce
the amount of omega-6s, which are trans fats, vegetable oils, fried foods, non-organic,
non-pasteurized beef, chicken, they’re loaded…anything that’s fed with grains. High grains are going to be contributing to
higher levels of omega-6s. You wanna have a diet that’s richer in omega-3s
like walnuts. And, of course, salmon, coconut oil, MCT oil,
those types of things are gonna be very, very powerful in helping you to manage a healthy
level of inflammation. Now, here are some of the top supplements
that you can add to your arsenal. And these are all things that I add to my
diet every single day. Omega-3 fatty acids, tocotrienol is one of
the most potent and bioavailable forms of vitamin E and you simply cannot get unless
you’re eating pure annatto or palm oil and they’re very difficult to find and all of
the exciting research when it comes to tocotrienol or vitamin E is in the tocotrienol family. There’s eight different categories of vitamin
E, the most common form that you’ll find in supplements, so the alpha-tocopherol family. And they’ve actually been shown to have an
inhibition against tocotrienol and its benefits to reduce oxidation of cholesterol [inaudible
00:10:33] results in that buildup of arterial plaquing as well as other benefits, inducing
apoptosis, natural programmed cell death, and preventing angiogenesis to abnormal cell
tissue growth. It’s exciting research. There’s so many benefits. And I’ve actually got an entire episode on
tocotrienols and on omega-3 fatty acids here on Kyäni Wellness TV because there is so
much to talk about and you need to be consuming about…I think it’s about two to four servings
of wild Alaskan salmon, about four to six ounces each time per week to get the omega-3s
that you need and I know most people inevitably are not doing that. And these two, for someone who’s had an autoimmune
condition and has been able to reverse it through diet, nutrition, lifestyle and everything
that I’m teaching you here on healthy living and on Kyäni Wellness TV has been attributed
to, really, these key supplements. They are a staple to helping me to manage
inflammation because just because I’ve been able to overcome some of the symptoms of the
autoimmune condition that I’ve had which I’ve talked about in other episodes doesn’t mean
that I’m cured. It is a lifelong battle. There is no finish line to health. That’s one of the biggest mistakes I see people
make. They start on a great regimen, they get back
in shape, they start eating well, they start supplementing properly, they start feeling
better and then they just stop doing the very activity that made them feel better. There is no finish line to health. It’s a lifelong endeavor and it is the best
investment that you can ever make because there is no expense when it comes to maintaining
your health and well-being because if you don’t, now that’s going to get expensive. Turmeric, you can sprinkle all over your food,
the nitrates that we’ve been talking about has a strong natural anti-inflammatory benefit
protecting the mucosal lining of the interior gut, helping with leaky gut syndrome in addition
with collagen which is really important in maintaining gut health as well as in terms
of probiotics, the list goes on. So very important and then, of course, superfoods
that are rich in the antioxidants polyphenols, bioflavonoids, flavonoids that are really,
and anthocyanins, that are so critically important to helping your body counter inflammation. And so, of course, many of the things that

  1. When it comes to alcohol do you find that wine is better vs say beer and liquor, or is it the actual ethanol that is the actual issue. I’m not talking about getting lit either. 1-2 drinks a week.
